Is Fashion Prepared for Web 3?

Introduction

“Web 3 is the next iteration of the internet - and if web 2 (our current internet) has taught us anything it is that as the internet iterates the whole business world reverberates. This next iteration has already begun, albeit currently in a small form. For everyone involved in the design, creation, sale, resale, renting and recycling of clothes- both physical and digital; this is interesting. Fashion companies from Nike to Farfetch are already investing in web 3 strategies and this goes far beyond experimenting with the metaverse. Therefore, the question we want to ask is what opportunities and challenges could web 3 bring to the fashion world."

Metail at the PI Apparel Spotlight Event 'Virtual Showrooms'

PI Apparel recently hosted a Spotlight event on Virtual Showrooms and our CEO, Jim Downing, was involved in a valuable panel session titled “The Evolution of Wholesale: What are the Brands Expecting From Us?”.

Jim opened that technology for this space is at an exciting, innovative (but early) stage of adoption: it’s about discovering what’s possible. He also highlighted the importance of applying technology appropriately to increase the reach of a brand’s storytelling. This is particularly relevant to using virtual showrooms as a way to expand and enhance wholesale channels. In terms of specific applications, Jim believes that the potential agility and adoption of VR and AR will mean we will see this gain more adoption in virtual showrooms, which is consistent with other areas of the industry.

Shaping the DPC Landscape

For us, it is an opportunity to continue being part of a broader conversation about the future of DPC within the apparel industry.

Download your copy, completely free today!

The overarching message, it seems, from those working in various contexts is that DPC is a rich and nuanced ecosystem that is not simply about pitting digital and physical against each other. We share this sentiment and want DPC to surpass being just a ”virtual” replacement for physical samples. Ben Hanson, the Editor-in-Chief of The Interline, predicts that the digital revolution will soon have a hand in all strategic objectives, from “material capture to marketing”.

How a Ghost is helping Metail improve the realism of apparel AR Try-On

One of Metail’s highlights from last year was Snap selecting us as their first Shopping and Fashion GHOST Fellow 💪👻 Whilst this was a big deal for our team you might be wondering “What is GHOST?” or “Why was Metail so excited by this opportunity?”

GHOST is Snap’s AR Innovation Lab and was designed to support the next generation of augmented reality products that help people shop, learn, play, and solve everyday problems around the world.

An apparel AR foray into a music and comedy festival with Sound & Vision

Metail talking about music and comedy festivals is probably not what you’d expect from a tech start-up focused on digitising and visualising people and clothes together. It is therefore probably worth explaining what led us to consider festivals before describing our latest AR virtual try on project with Sound & Vision.

It all started from thinking about music shows and remembering how there is usually a stall selling clothing merchandise for the artist. You might even have a t-shirt or hoodie for your favourite artist lurking in the back of your wardrobe. Here is a J Dilla Donuts t-shirt I found in my cupboard.

Metail selected as Snap's first Shopping & Fashion GHOST Fellow

Metail selected as Snap’s first Shopping & Fashion GHOST Fellow

Metail is embarking on an exciting phase after being selected as a Lab Fellow for GHOST - Snap’s AR Innovation Lab. The fellowship will involve working closely with Snap AR’s teams to help build new AR applications that leverage the most advanced capabilities in Snap’s Lens Studio.

Helping shoppers assess design relevance

“The advertising industry was transformed when technology-enabled advertisers to show more relevant online adverts to individuals. However, the visual and physical nature of clothes has made it harder for purely algorithmic approaches to bring this same level of relevance to apparel. This is why we believe AR is a positive change especially given the near-infinite online choice of clothes. AR try-on effortlessly places individuals within clothes and lets them quickly see whether a design could be relevant to them.” Vikesh Shah, New Business Director

How 3D Garment Design Can Mitigate the Impact of the Environment

Across the full lifecycle of clothing globally, the industry has an annual carbon footprint of 3.3 billion tonnes CO2 equivalent; more than international flights and maritime shipping combined.

On average, designers can make a physical sample up to 3–5 times during the development stage (Bertasiute, 2019). Typically, this means reworking each garment multiple times to achieve the appropriate fit and quality which in turn can lead to waste. Also, the lack of space to store the samples and cancellation of styles drives further generates waste. More than that, some luxury brands have been known to destroy samples to protect their intellectual property and brand value. With every sample produced, there is an impact from the carbon footprint generated from the energy, water, shipping, land and chemicals used.
